Parents – Trevor Underwood Alley and Emily Pass, Araluen. Vivian married Harriette Bawtree, whose address upon his enlistment was given as Waratah Street, Oatley, New South Wales.
Enlisted – 5 December 1914, Holsworthy, New South Wales. Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A33 Ayrshire on 20 December 1914²
Regimental Number – 245³
Aged at embarkation – 37⁴
Military service – 7th Light Horse Regiment, A Squadron. Rank – Corporal⁵ Vivian served on the Western Front and was awarded the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal.
Returned to Australia on 13 December 1915.
Died – 9 December 1968.⁶
Vivian Alley is at rest at Woronora Cemetery, Sutherland, New South Wales.⁷

Vivian was the fourth child of Trevor Underwood Alley and Emily Annie Pass. Trevor Alley (1844-1940), ⁸ married Emily Pass (1849- 1935), ⁹ on February 8, 1870, at Bettowynd, Araluen ¹⁰ and they had eleven children – William Underwood (1871-1955); Maude Isobel (1873-1956) (Maude Alley, of Roseville); Trevor Harold (1875-1906); Vivian Francis (1878-1968); Evaleen Emily (1880-1929); Percy Underwood (1882-1957); Unnamed male (1885-1885); Mary Gertrude (1886-1962) (Mrs Clack); Elsie E. (1887-1970) (Mrs Collier); Edgar Oswald (1888-1956) and Alice Muriel (1891-1934) (Mrs Brown).

On 11 July 1904, at Durban, South Africa¹¹ Vivian married Harriet Nunn Bawtree (1879-1951 )¹² and they had five children – Emily Marjorie Alley; Frances (Betty)( Arnold);¹³, Gwendolyn (Garvey); Vivienne (Watkins) and Mary Gertrude (Lucas).¹⁴

Vivian’s youngest daughter Mary Gertrude Alley, a physiotherapist, served in WWII. Service Number – NX203381: Date of birth – 12 March 1922: Place of birth – Sydney, New South Wales: Place of enlistment – Paddington, New South Wales: Next of Kin – Alley Vivian.¹⁵ Mary enlisted on 14 October 1941 and was discharged on 30 September 1946.¹⁶

Vivian’s residence was given as Waratah Street, Oatley in Sydney in 1940.¹⁷ A death notice was published in the Sydney Morning Herald on 10 December 1968, advising of the death of Vivian Francis Alley on 9 December 1968, late of Cremorne, and formerly of Oatley.¹⁸
