The Historical Census and Colonial Data Archive (HCCDA) is an archive of Australian colonial census publications and reports covering the period from 1833 to 1901, the year of Australia’s federation. This archive contains colonial census reports, but not individual census returns.
The Census of 1881 reported, ‘it is with extreme regret that I have to state that the efforts of the Compiler have been disastrously impeded by the calamitous fire which occurred at the Garden Palace, on the morning of Friday, the 22nd of September, 1882’. This fire destroyed the New South Wales census records for 1846, 1851, 1856, 1861, 1871 and 1881, including the detailed household forms from 1861, 1871 and 1881.
The NSW 1871 Census separately identified the Araluen Goldfields and described:
East Araluen Goldfields (Redbank, Mudmelong, Merricumbene, Favourite Flat and Crown Flat) with 2,900 residents (1,606 males, and 1,294 females), and
West Araluen Goldfields (Upper Araluen, Bourketown and Newtown) with 1,339 residents (752 males, and 587 females).
