Dr George Underwood Alley (1804-1879), son of John Alley and Jane Anne Underwood, married Catherine Amelia Smith, daughter of Kitty Amelia (nee Forth) and Thomas Smith in 1830 in Dublin, Ireland. In 1838, Catherine and George, with their children, Catherine, Augusta, and Richard, travelled as assisted immigrants on the ship ‘City of Edinburgh‘, arriving in Port Jackson, Sydney on 12 December 1838.

Dr Alley moved to Araluen, aged 59, in 18631Illawarra Mercury (Wollongong, NSW : 1856-1950), Friday 6 November 1863, p 2. following the flood of 1860, when the home in which the family lived on Burraga Island, near Terara, in the Shoalhaven, was washed away.2Braidwood Review and District Advocate (NSW : 1914-1954), Tuesday 14 May 1940, p 3.


In May 1903 the Braidwood and Araluen Express and People’s Advocate3Braidwood and Araluen Express and People’s Advocate (NSW : 1899-1904), Tuesday 5 May 1903, p 2. reported Mr T.U.  Alley, ‘is the owner of that splendid property in Araluen, consisting of over 2000 acres, originally known as the Burnell Estate, on which some of the very richest gold mining claims were located’. Dr George Underwood Alley and Catherine Amelia Smith had fifteen children, with a number of the family members, over many years, becoming well respected residents of the Araluen community.

  2. Catherine Amelia, (1833, Dublin – 1904, Araluen) who married William Blackwood Bruce in 1886.

She then married John Joseph Curr on 2 March 1867 and had four children. Christiana then married Stephen Fitzgerald in 1875 and had a child.

  11. Cecilia Underwood (1843, Inverary [near Wollongong] – 1919, Leichhardt) married W.W. Fell at Woolloomooloo in 1867 and they had a daughter.
