On 20 June 1863, the Sydney Morning Herald2Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842-1954), Saturday 20 June 1863, p 8. published ‘ALLEY—June 2nd, at her residence, Long Flat, Major’s Creek, Mrs. Arthur W. [U] Alley, of a daughter [Amelia Grace Underwood Alley].’ In March 1865, the Sydney Morning Herald3Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842-1954), Saturday 4 March 1865, p 7. reported on ‘an application by habeus corpus on the part of Arthur Underwood Alley, of Braidwood, storekeeper, to obtain the possession of his daughter, Amelia Grace Underwood Alley, aged one year and nine months, who was alleged to be detained by the applicant’s wife, Elizabeth Ann Alley … case was a very painful one. It arose out of a quarrel, or rather an estrangement between the applicant and respondent -Mr. and Mrs. Alley- evidently occasioned by the influence of the parents of the parties, or of one of them, and apparently owing its origin to religious differences … She was … a Roman Catholic, while Alley was a Protestant’.

The Sydney Mail5Sydney Mail (NSW : 1860-1871), Saturday 8 July 1865, p 8. on 8 July 1865 detailed the insolvency and surrender of the Estate in June 1865, of Arthur Underwood Alley, formerly of Majors Creek, near Braidwood aforesaid, storekeeper, with Liabilities of £667.17.9 and Assets of £224.1.6. The family then moved, settling in Orange, and then returning to Araluen in the early 1880s. A notice of insolvency was published for Arthur Underwood Alley of Araluen, storekeeper.
