Both William and Jane arrived in the colony as convicts: William Roberts on the Second Fleet in 1790 under sentence of seven years for horse theft, and Jane, also sentenced to seven years transportation, in 1803. They were married at St Phillip’s Church in Sydney in 1810, by which time they’d had at least two children together. 5William and Jane had eight children: Ann, William, Robert, Thomas, Richard, Elizabeth, Joseph, Benjamin.Australian Royalty: Genealogy of the Colony of NSW https://australianroyalty.net.au/tree/purnellmccord.ged/individual/I69681/William-Roberts] Accessed 25 February 2024.  William had earned his freedom by this time and had won the first of a number of lucrative government contracts for the construction of bridges and roads. … Roberts [also] ran a pub (the King’s Arms) on Hunter Street – being among those liquor licensees who survived the governor’s crackdown on “the very great and unnecessary “Number of Licensed Houses” in the colony – and was involved in farming and various other entrepreneurial ventures, including being among the first subscribers to the Bank of New South Wales. On his death in August 1819, he was remembered as “one of the first inhabitants of the Colony; a man respected for his integrity and honesty; and who has rendered great services to the Colony in the construction of its public roads”.’

  1. Elizabeth Jane Roberts (1824-1875). Elizabeth was married ‘On Saturday, the 30th November last [1844], at Exeter Farm, St. Vincent, by the Rev. J. Allen, Thomas Molyneaux Royds, Esq., Balallaby, eldest son of the late Rev. Thomas Molyneux Royds (1824-1852) died ‘On Tuesday, the 13th inst. [January 1852], at the residence of Andrew Badgery, Esq., Exeter Farm, Braidwood, in his 28th year, Thomas Molyneux Royds, Esq., J.P., fourth son of the late Rev. Edward Royds, Brereton Rectory, Cheshire.’12Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842-1954), Monday 19 January 1852, p 3.  In February 1852, the Sydney Morning Herald13Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842-1954), Monday 2 February 1852, p 3. added ‘Mr. Royds was only a few days previously thrown from his horse, and received a severe injury in the head and eyes, andon Monday was subdued, and … ended his sufferings in this life … that night’.

Elizabeth then married Rowland Hassall (1820-1904) ‘At Exeter Farm, on Saturday, the 2nd instant [December 1854], by the Rev. James Allen, … Rowland Hassall, Esq., [married] to Elizabeth Jane, widow of the late Thomas Molyneux Royd, Esq., of Liverpool, England, and niece of Andrew Badgery, Esq., of Braidwood’14Goulburn Herald and County of Argyle Advertiser (NSW : 1848-1859), Saturday 16 December 1854, p 3. and had two children.

5. Maria Roberts (1835– 1905) married Charles Dransfield (1835-1888) ‘on Tuesday, 13th instant [January 1857], at Braidwood Church, by the Rev. James Allen, Mr Charles Edward Dransfield, [married] to Maria, youngest daughter of the late William Roberts, Esq., of Exeter Farm, near Braidwood’.19Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842-1954), Saturday 24 January 1857, p 1. and they had eight children.

  • The Braidwood Dispatch20Cootamundra Herald (NSW : 1877-1954), Wednesday 1 February 1888, p 4. reported in February 1888 on ‘the death of … Mr. Charles E. Dransfield [who] After his marriage, Mr. Dransfield went to live at Jembaicumbene, where he erected a large and commodious mill, which, in olden times, supplied Araluen and other diggings with flour. Three years ago he left here …, and has for some time been engaged rebuilding the old mill at Wallendbeen, which was burnt down some time ago. Here … he contracted typhoid fever, … Mr. Dransfield leaves a widow and large family, most of whom are grown, and several are in business in Sydney’.
  • Mr Dransfield’s fully equipped four story stone and brick mill at Jembaicumbene was completed and open for business within six months.21Braidwood Historical Society Newsletter 27, December 2022. In July 1859 the Sydney Morning Herald22Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842-1954), Saturday 9 July 1859, p 5. reported on ‘the progress that was being made with Mr. Dransfield’s steam mill at Jembaicumbene, on the opposite side of the Swamp to the Pick and Shovel. The foundation has been laid, and the walls are in progress of being raised’.  In August 1859, the Sydney Morning Herald23Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842-1954), Wednesday 17 August 1859, p 2. reporting on progress added ‘Mr. Dransfield’s steam flour mill on his estate near the Jembaicumbene diggings. The boiler safely arrived at its destination the latter end of last week, and it is anticipated some of the now growing crops will be turned into flour in this new manufactory at the earliest opportunity. The want of a flour mill has long been felt.’
