By 1863, notices were placed regarding the Insolvent Estate of William Taylor, of Araluen, in the District of Braidwood, innkeeper,6New South Wales Government Gazette (Sydney, NSW: 1832-1900), Friday 15 May 1863 (No.85), p 1127, noting a meeting to be held regarding the matter on the 19 May.

The List of Licensed Publicans in Police District Araluen dated 1 January 1864, and updated,7Accumulated resources and research notes on parishes and churches of the Archdiocese collected by ‘Father Brian Maher’, Catholic Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn, Series CG1021:  Braidwood File 1 / Item 11/1. detailed the license transfer of the Exchange Hotel, from William Taylor, to Charles Whitby on 12 November 1866.

In 1867, the Illawarra Mercury8Illawarra Mercury (Wollongong, NSW: 1856-1950), Friday 12 April 1867, p 2. reported that the Oldest Man in the Colony is ‘at present in Araluen who is upwards of 97 years of age. His name is Richard Matthews, and he is an old resident of this district. Mr Charles Whitby publican, of Araluen, has kindly allowed the old fellow, who is very poor, and unable to do any work, to stay at his place for some short time back. We understand that a subscription is being made in Araluen to defray the cost of sending him to the Benevolent Asylum in Sydney’.

In November 1870, the New South Wales Police Gazette recorded9New South Wales Police Gazette and Weekly Record of Crime (Sydney : 1860-1930), Wednesday 2 November 1870 (No.44), p 296. John Ashby, summoned by Sergeant Brennan, Araluen Police, for allowing his licensed public-house to be open on the 17th ultimo (polling day), when a riot was anticipated, and in disobedience of a Magisterial order made and signed by Henry Burne, Esq., Police Magistrate at Araluen, has been fined £5, in default of payment one month’s imprisonment in Braidwood Gaol.

In 1872,10New South Wales Government Gazette (Sydney, NSW : 1832-1900), Tuesday 31 December 1872 (No.328), p 335. the Australian Town and Country Journal reported that ‘The undermentioned applicants for permission to purchase have been successful11Australian Town and Country Journal (Sydney, NSW : 1870-1919), Saturday 4 January 1873, p 8. … Sarah Watt,(Portion 436),  John Ashby (Section 10, Allotment 3) and James Clint (Portion 431), parish of Araluen’.
