The Araluen correspondent of the Braidwood Dispatch reported in April 1869, a ‘Death from Choking2Sydney Morning Herald (NSW: 1842-1954), Friday 16 April 1869, p 5 of Mr. James Hawke, a baker in the employ of Mr. Bruce in Braidwood.  Mr. Hawke, due the delay in the arrival of the Sydney mail in Braidwood, came down from Braidwood by the coach, late in the evening, reaching Newtown at about 8 o’clock.  He got out at Allan’s, the Oddfellows’ Arms, having brought down some butter for him from Bruce’s, met a friend and had some supper, when he suddenly appeared to be choking. Medical assistance from Dr. Redhead and Dr. Alley was sought without success, and on Mr. Allan’s return to the house, he found the sufferer had expired.  An inquest was held at 10 o’clock on Monday morning at Mr. Allan’s before the acting Coroner, Mr. J. W. Bunn.

In 1870, John Stephen Allan is further listed as the licensee of The Commercial Hotel, Elrington, Major’s Creek.3New South Wales Police Gazette and Weekly Record of Crime (Sydney : 1860-1930), Wednesday 14 September 1870 (No.37), p 240
