In 1857, the Sydney Morning Herald2Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842-1954), Saturday 11 July 1857, p 1. detailed ‘On the 2nd instant [July 1857], by special license, at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney, New South Wales, by the Rev. Father John Gorbellion, O.S.B., Mr. David Henry Higgins, to Miss Johanna Murphy, second daughter of the late Jeremiah Murphy, timber merchant, of this city.’ The Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction, noted in the NSW Government Gazette February 1851,3New South Wales Government Gazette (Sydney, NSW : 1832-1900), Friday 14 February 1851 (No.18), p 308. advising ‘in goods of …, Jeremiah Murphy, late of Lane Cove, …, timber dealer, deceased … notice that Mary Murphy … intends to apply for letters of administration to be granted her as the widow’

In April 1858, the Goulburn Herald4Goulburn Herald and County of Argyle Advertiser (NSW: 1848-1859), Wednesday 28 April 1858, p 2. reported ‘John Robinson’s application for a license for a house in the Long Flat Diggings, was refused on the ground of the house being in an unfinished state, the chairman intimating that the bench did not promise a license even when finished.’ 

The Insolvent Estate of John Robinson, of Araluen, in the District of Braidwood, Publican was published in August 1960, in the New South Wales Government Gazette.5New South Wales Government Gazette (Sydney, NSW : 1832-1900), Tuesday 28 August 1860 (No.159), p 1619.

The Araluen Star6Araluen Star and Miners Right (1863-1964), Saturday 28 May 1864, p 2. reported in May 1864, titled ‘New Publican License’, stating that ‘Mr. Donald Davidson has applied for a license for the House formerly kept by Mr. Robinson, below the Police Court. The House is to be known by the name of The Shamrock Inn.’  

In 1865, the Empire7Empire (Sydney, NSW : 1850-1875), Wednesday 18 October 1865, p 1. advertised the marriage at Araluen, of Peter Newling to Julia Murphy ‘NEWLING-MURPHY-On the 10th September, by special license, at Araluen, by the Rev. A. Likely, Mr. Peter Newling, gold miner, to Miss Julia Murphy, youngest daughter of Mr. Jeremiah Murphy, late timber merchant, Sydney.’

 An attempted stabbing in April 1867 was reported by Goulburn Herald8Goulburn Herald and Chronicle (NSW: 1864-1881), Wednesday 3 April 1867, p 2. as ‘John Lorrison was indicted for attempting to stab Christopher Jackson, innkeeper, of Araluen in April 1867. Both parties met at the Shamrock Inn, Araluen, where they had some angry words, which continued later at Jackson’s own house (Northumberland Inn), and resulted in the altercation, and subsequent Court case.’


The Sydney Morning Herald9Sydney Morning Herald (NSW: 1842-1954), Saturday 11 January 1868, p 6. reported a death by drowning in January 1868, ‘whereas John McCool, a young man of 25 years, employed at the Big Engine Claim, had gone bathing at a large waterhole at the Royal Oaks, but had gone down.  His companion with the assistance of Constable Smith and a man called Ross retrieved the body, but were unable to resuscitate.  Medical assistance was called, and Dr Alley directed that Mr McCool be removed to Mrs Murphy’s Shamrock Inn, where despite the added assistance of Dr. Redhead, Mr McCool was unable to be revived’.
